Do the right thing. Rodney Dangerfield, like most stand-up comics, struggled his way up, all the way to the top…which was considered to be the Tonight Show. He was at the top of his game, then his wife got sick and Rodney stopped his comedy work to take care of her and personally started raising his two young children. When his wife died, Rodney was a single father; so to be close to home, he opened his own comedy club and focused on raising his children. Rodney had a tough life indeed as he struggled with his “demons”; so often those who make us laugh are sad within. Still inspite of his inner struggles, he always tried to do the right thing. It is called integrity, an endangered quality these days.
The religious leaders at the time Jesus was arrested were supposed to show the highest integrity, claiming to be the most righteous leaders within the community. Though they had a law saying thou shall not bear false witness nor shall they cause murder, in order to pull off their selfish plan to eliminate Jesus, they had to operate their mock trial in the dark of night.
Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. And Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards to see the end. Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. (Matthew 26:57-60 ESV)
Evil and lost people love the darkness; it is where they hide. This is why the fallen get mad at the truth, seen most often in the light; for the light shows off what they really are, the true form of chaos. This is why they killed Jesus; the religious establishment was revealed for the hypocrites they are. If you are fallen, you simply must get rid of the light that shows you what you really are. Any false manipulation for the sake of power and control simply can not stand to be revealed in the light. But the true children of righteousness search for the light in order to be strengthened, made warm and whole again in the relationship with the LORD Jesus.
We read in Matthew 10:34 that Jesus did not come to bring peace, but a sword; a sword of truth that will cut deep. But evil doesn’t want peace; it thrives in chaos and hate, so any peacemaker will be a threat. This is why they killed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We children of God, seeking Jesus the Christ will be hated. Not by our design, but by our contrast. If you want to be liked by your worldly culture, don’t be a Christian. To be friends to the world is to be an enemy of God. Jesus said the world would hate us for what we are and whose we are, for we are “in” the world but not “of” the world; but don’t despair said Jesus, the world hated Him first (John 17:14-24). Knowing Jesus is not enough, you must be a new creation in Christ. Simply knowing who Jesus is, is not enough; the demons know who Jesus is. You must be bold in your following of the Master, your Creator; you must not be ashamed of Christ (Romans 1:16). You must search for and hold on to this Light for the Light of Christ Jesus is the light to the world (John 8:12 and 9:5). Light takes away darkness and reveals truth; we should all be searchers of the Light.
