I find it interesting that at the time the Ecclesiastes was written, containing these words in the first chapter: “What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun? Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever…No one remembers the former generations, and even those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow them.” (verses 3,4 and 11); that we are living in the same times. Don’t you see this all around you? Don’t you sense this in your own life? As an architect who worries over the smallest details, when I fly over a city and look down on all the ticky-tacky boxes, I wonder what is the fight all worth?
We live at a time, not much different from the time of Ecclesiastes when much seems so meaningless. The news reporters fabricate crisis after crisis to gain viewership, the weather reports warn of calamity that rarely materializes…oh how we MUST watch the weather! Global warming will destroy the planet even though there has been no warming for 20 years…but some back room computer model says so. [garbage in, garbage out] The government causes problem after problem and then says we are the ones to fix the problem, just give us more money! Education needs more money while wisdom and common sense decline at an alarming rate.
All this is happening as the culture strives to eliminate God in every possible way and form.
Don’t you see that it is ONLY with God that there is ANY meaning in life? This was true at King Solomon’s time and it is true for us today. You can fight it all you want, but you will only be jousting at windmills! The more you remove God the more unhappy you will become. You will be dead inside. There will be no life inside you as you toil at work day after day. “All things are wearisome” (Ecc 1:8). Everything will offend someone as we are seeing in every news cast on every day of the year; and no matter how you try to control people…you cannot control everything. Only Jesus is THE way, THE truth and THE life! Without Jesus, there is no life, only dryness & death and a meaningless existence. You live, you die! Why don’t you ask this question of those fighting against God…What is life about? Why am I here? You will not get a good answer because they have eyes but cannot see. They are dead inside.
We are here to glorify God, that’s it. The more we glorify God, the happier we will be and the more meaning we will have in this life as we serve the risen LORD, Jesus the Christ.
